DrumFIT Fitness Debuts at Woodhull School

February 5, 2025

Woodhull Intermediate School physical education teacher Carrie Postel has implemented an exercise program she calls DrumFIT Fitness. The fourth, fifth and sixth graders in special education teacher Ashley Williams’ class are loving it.

The Woodhull students use medicine balls for the unit.

“It is a cardio-based drumming program that combines physical activity with brain fitness,” Mrs. Postel explained. “Students are increasing  their overall well-being drumming away stress, getting fit and listening to some amazing music. Queen DrumFIT was the best along with the Chicken Dance DrumFit. They are using exercise balls with pool noodles as drum sticks and paint buckets to balance the balls.”

“Mrs. Postel is amazing working with the kids,” said Woodhull Principal Stephanie Campbell, who has joined in the gym activities. “They are all in sync and really enjoy the class.”

DrumFIT can be found in schools and gyms across the world. The non-competitive program engages those of all ages and abilities; is set to music that students know and love; promotes physical literacy and social and emotional learning.

Mrs. Postel has been a Huntington physical education teacher since September 2001. She obtained undergraduate and graduate degrees at Long Island University-C.W. Post and Touro College, respectively. Before coming to the district, she was a part-time health and physical education teacher in the neighboring Elwood School District.

Mrs. Postel has coached varsity, junior varsity and middle school girl’s volleyball and middle school girl’s track and field.
