August 22, 2025
Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School is set to soar in the new school year. Principal Donna Moro shared some of the initiatives that are sure to capture the interest of students, who number more than 400 spread across grades four, five and six.
“This year we will continue to focus on expanding student voice and student leadership in our school,” Ms. Moro said. “This year we plan on hosting our first leadership summit with students from each of our leadership groups; House Ambassadors, Student Council, Bilingual Language Leaders and Agents of Positive Change.”
Ms. Moro has been principal of Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School since August 2016.
She had been serving as the district’s STEM coach and elementary science coordinator for two years at the time of her appointment.
“We are also looking to increase parent participation in our PBIS initiatives creating a true partnership between home and school,” Ms. Moro said. “We will share our behavior matrix and create a similar one for parents use at home. Our goal is to ensure consistency, which creates a predictable, stable environment that enables children to develop and thrive both academically and socially. PBIS, when implemented with a focus on consistency across all settings, including the home, can significantly contribute to building positive behaviors, improving learning outcomes, and fostering a child's overall well-being.”
Ms. Moro obtained a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Hartford and Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in education degrees at Long Island University-C.W. Post. She obtained an advanced graduate certificate in school administration at Stony Brook University. A member of the J. Taylor Finley Middle School faculty for many years, Ms. Moro taught Earth Science from 2005 through June 2014.
“Last year we created a weekly shout out program,” Ms. Moro said. “Students and adults were able to recognize someone for going above and beyond to create a positive school climate that related to our REACH pledge. (R - respect, E- empathy, A- Achieve, C - Cooperate, H - Honesty). Students and staff recognized received a certificate, and a photo was displayed on our building TV's. Last year our PTA donated a mailbox for students and staff to submit their shoutouts. We look forward to making this the cornerstone of this very popular tradition.”
“Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School welcomes and respects all students and their families as members of the Huntington community of learners,” states an online profile. “It will prepare students for lifelong learning by developing their confidence and abilities as learners and problem-solvers. The school is committed to the use of innovative, inquiry-based, student-centered, interdisciplinary methods that embraces creativity as expressed through multiple intelligences and multiculturalism.”
