Huntington Girls’ Lax Topples Commack and Keeps Winning

The Huntington girls’ lacrosse team keeps winning. The Blue Devils toppled previously undefeated Commack on its home field on Wednesday afternoon, 9-7 to improve to 7-0 in league play and 8-1 overall.

Huntington previously topped highly regarded Northport and Ward Melville by identical 9-8 scores. In Commack, the Blue Devils were facing an exceptionally skilled team that is among the finest in the state. The score remained close until the final horn.

Huntington took a 3-2 first period lead, but Commack tied the game at 5-5 by halftime. The Blue Devils took a three goal lead with a 3-0 third period run. But the Cougars cut the advantage to two goals in the final minutes and put pressure on until time ran out.

Sabrina Boyle (26 goals; 6 assists) led Huntington with four goals. Jolie Weinschreider (22g; 7a) scored two goals and Grace Gordon (18g; 15a) added a goal and two assists. Devon St. John (8g; 3a) contributed a pair of assists. Jenna Italiano (4g; 2a) and Valentina Puccio (15g; 6a) also scored in the game.

Freshman goalie Juliet Johnson made nine sensational saves and recorded three other interceptions to preserve the win. Johnson now has 44 saves this spring.

“It just feels so good to get a win like that,” St. John said. “To come off two huge wins against state ranked Northport and Ward Melville, with people saying it was luck, and being able to beat the top seed to prove that we do deserve to be No. 1 is so gratifying and rewarding.”
