Southdown Gym Becomes Disco Bowling Alley

April 10, 2025

Southdown Primary School physical education teachers John Romano and Natalee Schaeffer turned back the clock in the gymnasium to the 1970’s this week and introduced disco bowling to students.

While continuing to teach the basic of bowling, the unit this week also featured instruction for second and third graders on keeping score via an “official” scoresheet.

The youngsters were able to indulge in bowling while the Southdown gym was aglow with disco lights and music, giving the space a real bowling alley feel.

This marks this sixth year that Mr. Romano has decorated the gym and turned it into a disco bowling alley. Teachers even came down to bowl with their classes along Principal Jill Amott-Erwig.

“The kids love this unit,” Mr. Romano said. “They get so excited to bowl while the disco lights are turned on. When they walk past the gym and see the disco lights on you can hear the excitement throughout the hallways.”

Then there’s the strike challenge, which provides a chance for all students to have a chance to win cool prizes from the prize box. This encourages the students on focusing to bowl a strike to improve their accuracy of bowling.  “This is my favorite unit of the school year,” Mr. Romano said. “The excitement in the building is amazing during this time!”
