Senior Toni Reyes-Sorto Captures Ira Schwartz Scholarship

Scholarship season has begun at Huntington High School. Senior Toni Reyes-Sorto was one of a small, select group of students to win the Ira Schwartz Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 from LEAD LI.

Formerly known by the acronym LIASCD, LEAD LI’s mission “is to pursue excellence in supervision and instruction and to promote the development of curriculum consistent with quality education for all students.”
The teenagers is currently playing on the Blue Devil varsity badminton team and is extremely involved in a variety of school activities outside of the classroom.
“Toni had to submit an essay in order to be eligible for this prestigious honor,” Huntington Principal Rochelle Brown said. “He did not know that he was selected until I presented him with the award after the conference. His excitement could not be contained as he expressed his surprise and gratitude on receiving this scholarship and how it would help him and his family, afford his college tuition.”
LEAD LI’s purpose is:
• To explore educational issues.
• To provide collegial opportunities for professional development.
• To improve educational programs and supervisory practices in our schools.
• To identify and share successful and innovative practices in instruction, curriculum development and supervision.
• To facilitate communication among Long Island educators, the New York State Education Department, the New York State Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development and other professional groups.
“Toni is an extraordinary student, well deserving to receive this scholarship,” Ms. Brown said. “He is actively involved in the school community from marching band to our most recent musical production of Mean Girls. I am extremely proud to be his principal and excited about what the future holds for him.”
