Southdown School Honors its March Stars
April 3, 2025
Southdown Primary School takes learning seriously, but teachers and support staff like to keep things fun, too. That said, there’s always a need to give classroom activities the attention they deserve and fortunately that’s the practice at the Browns Road school.
During planning for the building of Southdown, it was known as Browns Road Elementary School. But after school board members decided new schools north of 25A should be named for the area in which they are located, the building was formally dedicated in September 1954 as Southdown.
The Southdown School community likes to gather together and celebrate the achievements of its students and teachers. The group recently assembled to recognize the Splash Award recipients for March and pump everyone up for the final 12 weeks of the academic year.
Southdown is a bustling place. The school’s mascot is a dolphin, a mammal known to breach the water surface and splash bystanders. Southdown students are awarded “splashes” for displaying positive behavior in and out of the classroom, being kind to others, demonstrating proper behavior in hallways and even boosting the spirits of someone feeling down.
One Southdown student is selected from each class in the building for formal recognition at a monthly Splash assembly. The school considers these youngsters to be its stars.
Southdown’s March student honorees include:
Universal Pre-Kindergarten: Yared Portillo Giron, Morgan McAleavey

First Grade: Eva Liu, James Macco, Erick Pineda Castro, Naomi Maehr
Second Grade: Juryan Baca, Kaylin Claros Gonzalez, Maeve Szczurowski, John “Trace” Fulton, III
