Kaylee Splendorio knew it; she just knew it. The Huntington High School senior knew that James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia was the right place for her to continue pursuing her dream of studying architectural design.

“I chose JMU because when I stepped on the campus I felt at home,” Ms. Splendorio said. “I knew I wanted to go a little more south and Virginia was the perfect place. It is a great size school, with good sports teams, clubs and activities to stay involved in the community. It has a ton of majors to offer so if I end up wanting to change majors, I have a ton of different options. Although I’m going undecided my plan is to eventually study architectural design as JMU has a fantastic art school.”

Recognized as a Distinguished Senior earlier this spring, the teenager said she owes her success to hard work and determination, along with the support of her family, who pushed her to reach her goals.

“I originally thought I had wanted to do interior design,” Ms. Splendorio said. “But I realized as time went on I’d enjoy designing the exterior of buildings. That way I can involve both art and math.”

The senior said she especially credits her mother for her success, stating that she has helped guide her along the way.

The teenager has danced with the Lynch School of Ballet since she was four years old, performing in many productions, including The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Don Quixote, “all of which were held here at Huntington High School,” she said.

Ms. Splendorio has participated in Huntington High School’s Interact club, National History Day club, Social Justice Ambassadors, yearbook club, National Honor Society, Math Honor Society, English Honor Society and Social Studies Honor Society, holding leadership positions in all but one.

“Overall. I have had a great time at Huntington,” Ms. Splendorio said. “I started at Washington Primary and have made lasting friendships and memories. Huntington has given me so many opportunities to stay involved in the community and in the school with so many clubs to offer. Huntington has taught me a lot and I am grateful for my time spent here. Some of my favorite memories come from the classes with Ms. [Trish] Avelli, Ms. [Amelia] Saggese, Mr. [Nicholas] Wagner and especially Ms. [Aimee] Antorino.”
