Fashion Show Helps Year End on High Note

May 28, 2024

The year is ending on a high note for Huntington High School’s Fashion Design & Illustration program, which held a pair of well-received fashion shows in the gym last week.

“For the second portion of each of the two runway shows, my Fashion 2 and 3 students worked on a theme which they called ‘BlackOut,’” said teacher Kim Valerio, who leads the program. “The students each created a garment using black fabric and a fabric color from the color wheel.”

Sophomore grader Mason Gomez (Fashion 2) created three outfits for the runway. “Mason walked twice, first wearing an electric blue fur and black fur vest and later a blue romper with a black velvet jacket,” Ms. Valerio said. “Mason also created a light blue and white dress that was worn by his guest model, high school reading teacher Jennifer Savalli. In addition, Mason put together the background music for the fashion show and coached the students on how to walk the runway.”

Several students chose to create gowns to wear on the runway:

• Senior Cristel Hernandez Reyes (Fashion 3) created a burgundy red gown with a sequined mesh layer on top.

• Senior Izabella Gomez (Fashion 3) created a pale pink gown with a black lace layer on the bodice.

• Junior Celina Flores Lopez (Fashion 2 & 3) created a light purple gown with a black spider web designed lace over the skirt. She also created the matching black lace gloves she wore on the runway.

• Senior Estefany Salamanca (Fashion 1) created a long baby pink satin gown with ties on the back.

• Freshman Allison Sifontes Torres (Fashion 1) walked the runway with her six-year-old sister, Kendall Lopez, wearing matching sparkly mesh and pink garments that Allison created.

• Sophomore Katherine Moronta (Fashion 2) walked the runway with her cousin, five-year-old Valentina Flores, wearing coordinating black and white skirts and tops that Katherine created.

• Junior Toni Reyes-Sorto (Fashion 3) created two garments. He walked the runway in a light green top with sheer flowy sleeves. He also created a navy blue layered lace dress that was worn by his guest model, Julia Aldas.

• Freshman Charles Desrochers (Fashion 1) created unique pants of his own design using several types of denim.

• Sophomore Titan Elysee (Fashion 1) created red pants and a red and beige antique print top.

• Sophomore Javier Santiago Benitez (Fashion 1) wore 3 pieces that he created on the runway, a flannel bucket hat, a white knit top, and a small blue handbag.
