Huntington Excels at Suffolk Math Tournament

Huntington UFSD SEARCH program students in fifth and sixth grades performed will in the Suffolk County Math Tournament, vying against 350 students from across the county.

The tournament is typically held at Stony Brook University, but it went virtual this year. However, it was just as challenging as ever.

The tournament’s questions have always been tricky, multi-step and challenging, but this year’s were especially difficult. Huntington’s competitors were ready.

“We had 10 Huntington students participate and I'm so proud to share that our sixth grade Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School/Woodhull Intermediate School combined team won first place for their grade level,” Huntington SEARCH teacher and Math Olympiad coach Jessica Risalvato said. A second team comprise of Woodhull School fifth graders captured third place for their grade level.

Six Huntington UFSD students also won individual awards for their performance. Fifth graders Nico Chan Camargo and Michael Spagnoletti garnered seventh and ninth place, respectively.

Huntington sixth graders Angie Ramos Alejandro, Mia Hodkinson, Harry Gross and Owen Hoffman also finished at or near the top. Ms. Ramos Alejandro won first place with Ms. Hodkinson taking third place. Messrs. Gross and Hoffman placed fifth and sixth, respectively.

“They were absolutely amazing throughout every aspect of the competition,” said Ms. Risalvato about the Huntington math whizzes.
