The Huntington boys’ lacrosse team hosts Smithtown East in a Section XI Division I playoff game at 4 p.m. at Blue Devil Stadium. Admission is free.
Huntington (12-4 overall; 10-4 league) topped Smithtown East (8-8; 8-6) on April 24 in a regular season game, 13-5. The Blue Devils will be led into the game by head coach Julian Watts and assistant coaches Andrew Gutierrez and George Powers and captains Thomas Girimonti, Brian Hrybenko, Patrick Knieriem and Daniel McNulty.
Huntington’s offense is led by Girimonti, who has notched 50 goals and 30 assists and McNulty who has tallied 36 goals and 28 assists. Tommy Kline (21g, 25a), Colin Lennon (27g, 21a), Tim McDonald (21g,17g) and Hrybenko (20g, 12a) have all posted strong offensive numbers. The Blue Devils will also continue to rely on Joey Zink (10g, 4a) and Thomas Smith’s (5g, 9a) ability to either score or assist others in scoring.
Junior Luca Cuozzo (4g, 4a) is Huntington’s faceoff specialist, who has played a large role in every Blue Devil victory. Goalie Will Fallon has recorded 150 saves in 16 games.
Huntington’s defensive unit will be more important than ever against Smithtown East. The Blue Devils need to control the field if they want to move on to the Suffolk Final Four round.
Interest in the game has been building since last week. A large crowd is expected. The Blue Devils feed off their fans’ energy and playing on their home field is expected to benefit the team.
