Huntington Booster Club Dedicates New Flagpole

May 9, 2024

Huntington High School boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams joined the Huntington Booster Club and the Kline family in dedicating a new 50 foot tall flagpole behind the baseball field backstop earlier this week.

The project cost more than $10,000 and was made possible by a donation from the Kline Family through the Huntington Booster Club. The pole was dedicated to the memory of Greg Kline, a Huntington High School graduate and lacrosse alumni who played an outsized role in the community.

The aluminum cone tapered flagpole has a satin brush finish with a single external halyard, gold aluminum ball atop and a spun aluminum collar with ground sleeve mounting.

The flagpole sits at the intersection of the baseball field, the new turf field now called Alumni Field and Blue Devil Stadium. It is a towering presence with the flag visible for an extended distance.

Blue Devil boys’ lacrosse players helped unfurl an 8x12 foot US flag, which Thomas Kline then raised into position. A powerful spotlight has been installed nearby to shine on the flag during night hours.

Dozens of Huntington lacrosse players saw the flag go up the pole for the first time, which seemed entirely appropriate and fitting since Mr. Kline served as president of the Huntington Lacrosse Alumni Assn.

Brendan Ryan, a well-known keyboardist, composer and producer with the rock band “The Bogmen” and a close friend of Mr. Kline’s was on hand to perform a well-received rendition of “God Bless America” on trumpet.

Huntington Booster Club President David Evans spoke briefly during the short ceremony as Kline family members stood nearby. Some additional work at the site is planned, including steps on the west side leading up to the elevated flagpole location.

Gregory James Kline’s life was cut short suddenly in August 2020. “If you had the good fortune of knowing Greg, you know that he was the ultimate husband, father, son, brother, teammate, patriot, philanthropist and best friend to all,” according to a profile on the Greg Kline Foundation page. “While his years were cut short, the way he lived his life certainly wasn’t. His motto was ‘Get Busy Living’ - and that is exactly what he did. Greg lived his life with a clear purpose always looking out for those in need. He touched so many lives and the Greg Kline Foundation was created for those who would like to pay it forward in the spirit of Greg’s legacy.”
