Finley Boys’ Tennis Takes to the Court

May 7, 2024

The J. Taylor Finley Middle School tennis team is swinging for aces with first year coach Andrew Marcy.

The lineup consists of seventh graders Harrison Jennings, Hunter Kline, Gavin Kline, Matthew Krull, Steven Lapp, Heath Patti, Jonathan Soviero and Justin Vujeva and eighth graders Elias Caldwell, Joseph Herman, Christopher Moreira Reyes, Clive Polinsky, Henry Schmid and Logan Tine.

Finley practices and plays its home matches at the three court complex on the west side the building. It’s a cozy little home that has served the program well over the years.

Finley is in the midst of a 10 meet schedule with home contests against Northport, Hauppauge, East Northport, Smithtown-Accompsett and Elwood and visiting matches at Oldfield, Commack, Smithtown-Nesaquake/Great Hollow, Stimson and Bay Shore.

Dr. Marcy built upon a small turnout and recruited players, bringing the roster size up to 14. The team has been working hard during daily practice sessions, drilling skills and techniques and playing scrimmage matches against each other.

Finley has a history of fielding strong boys’ tennis teams with many undefeated seasons since the late 1970s when the program was created.

A science teacher at Finley, Dr. Marcy is a competitive coach who is training his team in consultation with Huntington High School head coach Jamie Fishlow.

With three full weeks to go in the season, the players and their coach are confident that success lies ahead.
