May 6, 2024

Huntington High School visual artists Rachel Learned, Reese Rinaldi and Samantha Koepele captured honors in the Huntington Camera Club’s 34th annual photography contest. Over $1700 in prizes were awarded during last week’s ceremony.

The Huntington Camera Club’s annual contest is considered by many to be Long Island’s most prestigious. This year’s competition drew 820 entries from 428 students representing 16 Nassau and Suffolk high schools and 20 photography teachers.

In the Reflections category, Ms. Learned claimed third place and Ms. Koepele garnered honorable mention recognition. Ms. Rinaldi was honorable mention in the Open category.

“The creativity and talent of these young people never ceases to amaze and inspire me,” Huntington Camera Club President Darin Reed said.

The award recipients were celebrated before a large crowd of classmates, family and friends as well as Huntington Camera Club members. All three Huntington High School photographers have been studying with longtime teacher Pamela Piffard.

The Huntington Camera Club has hosted the competition since 1991. Since then more than $40,000 in prizes has been presented. “The club is proud to shine a spotlight on the talents of these young photographers and their teachers,” according to the organization’s website. “A competition of this nature is only possible because of the generosity of the local business community and club membership.”

A panel of judges reviewed every image with an eye on their technical aspects and creativity as well as their ability to fit the category in which they were entered.
