Huntington High School Poetry Café Continues Tradition
May 1, 2024
Huntington High School’s National English Honor Society chapter has been organizing poetry cafés in the fall and spring in the library for many years. That same tradition continues today as a recent after school gathering drew a crowd.
This year’s National English Honor Society chapter is led by students Lily Tierney (president), Anne Tyrrell (vice president), Marley Joseph (secretary), Kaylee Splendorio (treasurer) and Ruby Meidenman (public relations). Teachers Bonnie Guarino and Aimee Antorino are the organization’s faculty advisors.
National English Honor Society members are required to participate in the poetry cafés, but all students in the high school are welcome to attend.
“Many students volunteer to read either their own poetry or a poem from one of their favorite poets, such as Robert Frost, Maya Angelou, Shel Silverstein and Sylvia Plath,” Ms. Antorino said
The event was well attended by students from every grade level. Snacks and refreshments were served. “It was a successful event,” Ms. Guarino said.
Participants were able to draw upon their creativity and ingenuity and practice their public speaking skills while having an audience listen to their work. It was a fun and rewarding experience for everyone. It also brought back to life many poems from yesteryear.
