Layna Abraham Presented Art Honor Society Award
June 26, 2024
Layna Abraham is a gifted young woman by any measure. The Huntington High School senior is headed to the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she plans to study psychology.
Ms. Abraham was presented with the Art Honor Society Award by high school art teacher Kim Valerio. It carries a $200 stipend. The presentation was made at Huntington’s departmental awards and scholarships ceremony in the auditorium.
Ms. Abraham has been serving as co-president of the Art Honor Society this year. The teenager has compiled an outstanding academic record and was honored as a Distinguished Senior this past spring.
Ms. Abraham said having supportive family members, friends and teachers has helped her to be successful. Allowing herself time to study both in and out of school those topics that she didn’t fully understand has contributed to her considerable achievements.
A key member of the Blue Devil varsity fencing team, Ms. Abraham has also participated in all eight high school drama club productions over the past four years.
The National Art Honor Society was founded in 1978 “to inspire and recognize students who have shown outstanding ability and interest in art.” Student members of the organization seek “to attain the highest standards in art scholarship, character and service and to bring art education to the attention of the school and community.”
The Society’s charge to its members is to: “Take of the world its colors and forms, its lines and textures, its balances and movements and spaces; combine all these into a beautiful statement of what it is to be human. Give back to the world the same element of beauty that you, as an artist, take from it. Create beauty in the world with your talents and your living.”
