June 25, 2024
A dozen Huntington High School students claimed honors in this year’s Long Island Science Congress program. Participants presented their projects and research findings to judges at the Cradle of Aviation in Garden City. An awards ceremony was recently held in West Islip.
The Huntington students are all participating in the high school’s science research program.
Jessica Bree, Claire Parks, Jupiter Brown and Lucas Spagnoletti all captured Achievement Awards. Quinn Rinaldi, Jordana Boxer, Chelsea Drummings, Emma Polinsky and Cecilena Monge Moreira garnered Meritorious Awards. Jack Ruthkowski, Mildred Hernandez Veliz and Erika Hernandez Veliz earned Honorable Mention recognition.
Dozens of Huntington students spread across grades 9-12 are participating in the high school’s science research program. Students in the program have won regional, state and national honors over the years and have advanced to the pinnacle of high school science research contests. Participants conduct research in the high school lab and at off-site labs under the watchful eyes of professional mentors.
The research program helps students develop their oral and written skills. Participants make presentations, engage in statistical analysis and use various forms of technology. Students are assessed via a portfolio that typically includes written work, project proposals, research analysis and log data entry.
Many of the underclassmen in the program will be engaging in summer research studies and internships as they continue with their projects.
