Marley Joseph knows what she wants, especially after taking several business classes with Huntington High School teacher Paige Tyree Furman. The senior plans to study at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business where she intends to major in marketing in preparation for a career that incorporates graphic design and advertising.
“I chose Indiana University mainly because of the prestigious business school, the Kelley School of Business,” Ms. Joseph said. “When I was choosing between schools, I knew that I wanted to go somewhere with high energy and a lot of school spirit, which is prevalent at this Big 10 school. I wasn’t sure about going so far away, but once I visited I felt at home.”
Mrs. Furman has mentored Ms. Joseph over the past four years and the two really hit it off with each other. “I decided that I am really interested in all things business,” the teenager said. “Being in the Virtual Enterprise class, I learned that I really enjoy creating graphics, but I also enjoy the marketing side of business.”
The senior cites her time management and organizational skills as the keys to her success. She has especially enjoyed building relationships with her teachers and classmates throughout high school.
“I had a very enjoyable experience throughout my 13 years in Huntington UFSD,” Ms. Joseph said. “I made positive connections with many teachers as well as my classmates. I made some of my best friends from being in the same classes with them. I am so glad to have grown up in Huntington and all the opportunities it gave me.”
Ms. Joseph served historian of the National Honor Society, secretary of the English Honor Society and vice president Social Studies Honor Society. She was also a member of the Science Honor Society.
The teenager volunteered with Huntington’s Habitat for Humanity and Key Club chapters and was a yearbook club member, too.
Ms. Joseph was involved outside of school with The Witness project, organizing a fundraiser for the group, which helps to support Holocaust survivors. “I was paired with a Holocaust survivor for a six month period, Werner Reich and explored and learned firsthand of his experiences during World War II and his extraordinary story of survival,” she said.
