Huntington High School senior Samantha Koepele has garnered the Huntington Fire Department’s Honorary Chief Ray Mazoyer Award for Economics. It carries a stipend of $500.
Ms. Koepele plans to study political science and public policy at SUNY Geneseo in the fall. She is one of the top students in Huntington’s Class of 2024. Her weighted academic average was 102 in the most recent marking period.
Huntington Fire Department Ex-Chief Neil Getter announced the award at the high school’s annual senior scholarships and awards night earlier this week.
Ms. Koepele said her success can be credited to her organizational skills and to staying position. She said that remaining positive has helped her to overcome numerous challenges. She believes that keeping a smile on her face and moving forward “helps things to always work out. Keeping her schoolwork organized helps her feel less overwhelmed.
The teenager has especially enjoyed getting to meet a wide variety of people over the past four years. She has taken delight in extracurricular activities, too. She ran a clothing swap with the Environmental Club, helped coordinate K-Factor with the high school’s Key Club and helped spur a winter pep rally as co-president of the Principal’s Advisory Council.
Ms. Koepele is articulate and well-informed. She doesn’t shy away from political activism when she spots a need for it.
