Girls’ Golf Popularity Booms at Huntington High School

The popularity of girls’ golf at Huntington High School is booming. The Blue Devils completed a successful second varsity season with a roster of more than 30 and seven victories.

Seniors Brooke Parks and Jane Callery both captured All-League honors with Parks qualifying for the Suffolk individual tournament. Coached by Michael Marinello and volunteer assistant coaches Michele Kustera, Robert Colvin and Jenna Merget, Huntington finished third in the league standings.

“This was a great group of girls who were very coachable,” Marinello said. The coach is setting his eyes on an ambitious goal for next spring: winning the league championship.

Parks (7-2-1 in the No. 1 position), Callery (8-3-1 in the No. 3 position) and Ella O’Heir (6-5-1 in the No. 4 position) led the Blue Devils this spring.

“Brook is an athletic person that will always have golf as a lifetime activity,” Marinello said. “She was a great captain and helped pave the way for future teams. Jane didn’t even want to play on the competitive team, but was talked into doing it. She progressed nicely and was named captain this season. She has great competitive spirit and was a pleasure to coach. Ella is a first time golfer who quickly progressed into the starting lineup. Ella’s ability helped lift the team to many victories.”

Marinello is encouraged by the size of the roster and the popularity of the sport at Huntington High School.

“The goal is to improve every year and inspire our athletes to pursue improvement on their own,” the coach said. “I am going to try and get more tee times to increase participation in the on course experience.”
