Summer Reading for Huntington High School Students

A regular diet of summer reading is essential for Huntington High School students, who should never be without a book. Whether to get a little bit ahead in their studies or just for pure fun and general enjoyment, summer reading is a must for all of the teenagers.

Huntington UFSD have reached out to parents for their support, asking them to encourage their child to pick up a book and read this summer. The district has always looked to parents as essential partners in education and the summer months are no different.

“This summer will provide time for your child to enjoy the pleasures of reading and we are happy to present several opportunities for this endeavor,” wrote Assistant Superintendent Beth McCoy in a letter to parents. “Spending time reading will give your child structure during the day and will maintain reading as a priority as we transition to the new school year.”

A Huntington High School summer reading website has been established with suggested literature for each grade level. The site can be found at this link:

“Regardless of which grade or level your child will be entering at Huntington High School, students can use the link below to access recommended texts during the summer months,” Mrs. McCoy said. “Honors/AP summer assignments for English and Social Studies are linked here, too.”

Recommended books, as well as others sure to be of interest to high school students, can be found in the Huntington High School library platform Destiny or in the Huntington Public Library’s collections. Students will need a library card to access books at the public library. These cards are available at the village or station branch of the public library. The Huntington High School librarian can also assist students in getting a card.

Students completing the suggested reading are also invited to respond in writing. This summer work will enable students to receive up to three points added to their first quarter English grade in the fall. The written work is explained on the homepage of the summer reading website. Students can write this reaction for credit or their reading of the book can be for pure enjoyment with no written requirement.

Another alternative is to participate in the Huntington Public Library’s summer reading program. A link to this program is provided on the Huntington High School Summer 2024 Reading site as well.

“Our teachers encourage exploration of the joy of reading this summer,” Chairperson of Humanities Joseph Leavy said.
