Woodhull Sixth Graders Make Presentations Entirely in Spanish

Woodhull Intermediate School’s sixth grade dual language culminating experience gave students a chance to shine while presenting their projects on “Spanish speaking countries” to an audience of parents, classmates and teachers.

What made the day especially impressive was that the sixth graders made their presentations entirely in Spanish. “The main focus was to highlight the importance of these nations, their contributions to society, particular food, music, important people, population, geographical location, etc.” said Leni Joya, a Huntington alum who returned to the district to teach Spanish at J. Taylor Finley Middle School and Woodhull.

Several students added personal anecdotes regarding their home countries, as well as connections between those countries and the U.S. As the sixth graders went about making their presentations using the Spanish language, the audience, which included many fifth grade dual language students couldn’t help but be impressed.

“The parents had the opportunity to visit each station and ask questions regarding the countries in each group,” Mr. Joya said. “Additionally, at the end of the presentation, the parents and other classmates had the chance to ask questions as a whole to each group.”

The sixth graders also enjoyed a tasty meal and were even able to sample several Latin American candies and chips.

The event served as a culminating experience for the sixth graders, who are all graduates of the district’s dual language program. “Now, they are heading into middle school,” Mr. Joya said.
