Senior Jannel Marroquin Chooses Providence College

Jannel Marroquin is a sweet young woman with a work ethic that is hard to beat. The Huntington High School senior has earned excellent grades over the past four years. She plans to study biological sciences with a minor in secondary education at Providence College in Rhode Island.
The teenager has been a mainstay on the Blue Devil cross country, winter and spring track and field teams. Ms. Marroquin has devoted countless hours to training without complaint. She’s been a great teammate and a role model.
Ms. Marroquin cites staying on top of her schoolwork and going to class with a positive mindset and ready to learn as the keys to her success. Her ambition to always do just a little bit better is what motivates her to push on.
“I chose Providence because it was the only university where I felt at home,” Ms. Marroquin said. “I may have gotten into better universities, but in the end I knew I would thrive at Providence. Its academic level is rigorous and what I loved most is how involved I can get in school activities. They have a lot of club sports and intramurals, which is something I’ll definitely take part in.
She is known for striving to find ways to inch her academic grade average upward and learned that in the end, how work has a way of always paying off.
“I chose biology and secondary education as my major because I want to become a biology teacher,” Ms. Marroquin said. “After taking AP Biology, I instantly feel in love with the subject and knew that's what I wanted to study. I also plan on minoring in chemistry because it’s also another science I enjoy learning. Science is something that is always evolving, which leads to infinite opportunities to keep learning. I hope to come back to Huntington and become not only a teacher, but also a coach for track and cross country.”
Developing a National History Day project that advanced to the state finals and competing at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia are among the highlights of Ms. Marroquin’s high school experience.
Ms. Marroquin is a “people person” and she has enjoyed meeting new people every year in the classroom and on the track and trails. She was a team captain during the fall, winter and spring seasons and displays a level of maturity that has always been appreciated by everyone.
“Huntington has given me the opportunity to develop into who I am today,” Ms. Marroquin said. “The past four years have been filled with memories that will stick with me forever and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
