June  3, 2024

Lily Tierney can do anything and be anything. The Huntington High School senior is just that talented. The owner of an academic grade average that tabulates to 104, she plans to study art history at Binghamton University.

Ms. Tierney said her success can be traced to her ability to balance academics with a social life. She said it’s “essential to find happiness in educational pursuits, friends and hobbies.”

Articulate, personable, well-liked, respected – these are all words that describe Ms. Tierney, who has earned the affection of both her classmates and teachers.

The teenager said that understanding that “hard work goes hand in hand with prioritizing mental health” changed her outlook on high school.

One of the towering figures in Huntington’s Class of 2024, Ms. Tierney has aced many of the high school’s most challenging courses and she took special delight in Advanced Placement Environmental Science and AP Literature, going on to serve as a classroom intern with a teacher for the latter.

At Binghamton, Ms. Tierney has sketched out an interesting freshman year. “I plan to be a part of their source research project with a museum studies concentration,” she said.

“The Source Project is a sequence of two, four-credit courses called research streams that take place in the fall and spring semesters of a student’s first year at Binghamton University,” according to a program overview. “Students have the opportunity to discover sources and interpret their significance. They ask questions and seek answers, guided by experienced faculty who engage in these practices as their profession. Students produce original projects, express their findings, and learn how to communicate and disseminate the relevance of their work. The Source Project is an excellent opportunity to connect with other first-year peers who share similar interests. This experience provides a dynamic and engaging small class environment that encourages the building of meaningful connections with both fellow students and professors.”

President of Huntington High School’s English Honor Society, Ms. Tierney has spent time on weekends tutoring bilingual elementary grade level students in English skills.

A valued member of the high school’s drama club, the senior has been in all eight shows since beginning her freshman year. Ms. Tierney has been nominated for a Hunting-Tony Award as Best Lead Actress in a Play for her performance in last fall’s “Humbug.”

The senior said that “being able to meet such incredible people, teachers and students” over the past four years has given her “the gift of a lifetime.”
