Jayden Hoff Isabell Captures Woody Herman Jazz Award

Jayden Hoff Isabell possesses many gifts and talents, including those that go along with being a skilled musician. The Huntington High School Class of 2024 member captured this year’s Woody Herman Jazz Award.
Mr. Hoff Isabell plans to pursue a degree at Stony Brook University. Inducted into Huntington’s National Honor Society chapter, the teenager excelled academically throughout high school in addition to being a standout musician.
Huntington music teacher Dr. Jason Giachetti presented Mr. Hoff Isabell with his award during the Class of 2024’s academic awards ceremony in the high school auditorium.
The Woody Herman Jazz Award was created in 1988 following the death of Mr. Herman a year earlier. It is given to an outstanding graduating senior jazz band member “who has demonstrated dedication, loyalty, character and discipline to the jazz band program while achieving the highest musical standards required of instrumental music.”
Born in Milwaukee in 1913, Mr. Herman was a legendary saxophonist and clarinetist and the leader of one of the most popular jazz big bands. His music has been described as timeless and is still listened to throughout the world.
As a sophomore, Mr. Hoff Isabell participated in the Cold Spring Harbor Lab’s STARS program that aims to cultivate and diversify the next generation of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine leaders.
Led by the Cold Spring Harbor Lab in partnership with Stony Brook University and Hofstra University/Northwell Health, STARS provides hands-on summer research experiences, ongoing mentorship, and opportunities for additional research internships. The program also offers college guidance and support within a network of alumni. Ultimately, STARS aims to support students throughout their entire career trajectory and hopes to welcome them back to CSHL, Stony Brook, Hofstra, and other institutions as researchers, faculty, doctors and other health professionals.
Mr. Hoff Isabell is masterful on trombone. He also participated in the Blue Devil varsity track program, earning New York State Scholar Athlete Award honors.
