AP Capstone Achievement Awards Presented to Seniors

July 17, 2024

Eleven Huntington High School graduating seniors were presented with Advanced Placement Capstone Achievement Awards by the district’s Chairman of Humanities Joseph Leavy and English teacher Michael Schwendemann. The teenagers completed a pair of rigorous full year courses.

Sonia Acevedo Ortiz (Hofstra University), Lars Galvin (Colgate University), Aidan Geller (University of Tampa), Stacy Guevara (Stony Brook University), Natalia Hernandez (LIU Post), Hillel Linker (University at Albany), Shaina Linker (Purdue University), Jack Ruthkowski (SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry), Kaylee Splendorio (James Madison University), Angel Villatoro (Stony Brook University) and Tyler Wheeler (Franklin & Marshall College) were all honored.

The group was recognized at the high school’s senior scholarships and awards night ceremony that drew a crowd of about 300 to the auditorium.

The College Board’s AP Capstone is a diploma program featuring two full year courses: AP Seminar and AP Research.

“Rather than teaching subject-specific content, these courses develop students’ skills in research, analysis, evidence-based arguments, collaboration, writing and presenting,” according to the College Board. “Students who complete the two-year program can earn one of two different AP Capstone awards, which are valued by colleges across the United States and around the world.”

AP Seminar is a foundational course in which students explore the complexities of academic and real-world issues. AP Research allows students to deeply explore an academic topic, problem, issue, or idea of individual interest.
