Cristel Hernandez Reyes Garners Award for Citizenship

July 10, 2024

Huntington Fire Department Ex-Chief Neil Getter presented the Honorary Chief Robert Henneborn Award for Citizenship to Huntington High School Class of 2024 member Cristel Hernandez Reyes. The award carries a $500 stipend.

Ms. Hernandez plans to study psychology at LIU Post in the fall. She’s a highly regarded young woman who was named a Distinguished Senior in recognition of her outstanding classroom performance.

Inducted into the high school’s Spanish Honor Society and Math Honor Society, Ms. Hernandez said she owes her success to her organizational skills. She maintains a list of her assignments in her agenda book. It allows her to submit all of her work on time.

When Ms. Hernandez finds herself getting overwhelmed, she knows it’s time to speak with someone she trusts, which helps her calm down. She has especially enjoyed getting to know her teachers at Huntington High School. Social studies teacher Kaitlyn Hanft has been especially helpful and always supportive and encouraging, helping the teenager to believe in herself.

Ms. Hernandez has excelled across the board, including in the high school’s fashion design and illustration program.

President of the high school’s New World Club, Ms. Hernandez and club members helped newcomers to the United States adjust quickly to a new country and school district.
