Blue Devil Track Underclassmen Nipped for County Title

January 18, 2024

Huntington High School’s boys’ track and field underclassmen performed well at the Suffolk Freshman/Sophomore Championships at Suffolk-West in Brentwood last Friday night.

Blue Devil boys' track and field coach Ronald E. Wilson.

Sophomore Max Carino had a personal best in the 1000m run placing a close second in 2:51.47. He was closing with a fury, but ran out of ground at the finish line. Northport's Doug Sorto led from wire to wire and finished in 2:50.28 Carino was fifth after the third lap and continued to improve each stride.

The sophomore 4x400m relay of lead leg Jacob Guzik, second leg Eric Heinz, third leg Max Carino, and anchor leg Titan Elysee earned bronze medals placing fourth in 3:57.

In the freshmen 1000m, it was Eric Heinz who ran a great, tactical race. “He stayed behind the top seeded runner, William Smith of Smithtown West,” head coach Ronald E. Wilson said. “On the last lap, Heinz passed Smith on the backstretch and held him off for the gold finishing the race in a personal best of 2:53.51.”

The freshmen 4x200m relay of lead leg Joe Raymundo, second leg Zayvion McCoy, third leg Dylan Michaelson and anchor eighth grader, Rasiere Blizzard, placed a close third in 1:49. “They were excited when they were presented with their medals,” Wilson said.

In the throwing circle, it was freshmen Joe Rivers and Colby Curran who came up big for Huntington.  Rivers on his second throw in the preliminaries threw 35-03 feet to claim the top spot. It was short-lived because on Curran’s second shot put toss he threw 36-04 feet. After the preliminaries, Curran led in first and with Rivers in second. That order would remain the same as they both continued to improve their distances. Curran went on to capture the freshman title with a final round toss of 37-11.5 feet with Rivers grabbing the silver medal behind a throw of 35-07 feet.

Overall, Huntington High School placed a close second in the team standings behind Longwood, 44-42 points.
