Huntington Art Honor Society Members Stay Busy

Huntington High School’s Art Honor Society seeks to “magnify the innovation, skill and scholarship that visual arts programs and students bring to the district and community.” The organization’s members are busy pursuing their mission.

The group is led by Toni Reyes-Sorto (co-president), Layna Abraham (co-president), Keysy Diaz Campus (secretary), Carolina Ramos Saravia (treasurer), Anibella Fazin (webmaster) and Isabella Careccia-Johnson (historian). Teachers Kristen Fiorenti and Jennifer Fazin serve as the organization’s faculty advisors.

The National Art Honor Society was founded in 1978 “to inspire and recognize students who have shown outstanding ability and interest in art.” Student members of the organization seek “to attain the highest standards in art scholarship, character and service and to bring art education to the attention of the school and community.”

The Society’s charge to its members is to: “Take of the world its colors and forms, its lines and textures, its balances and movements and spaces; combine all these into a beautiful statement of what it is to be human. Give back to the world the same element of beauty that you, as an artist, take from it. Create beauty in the world with your talents and your living.”

The Huntington Art Honor Society has most recently collaborated with district elementary school art teacher Nicholas Matarazzo and his students on a project.

“The Art Honor Society has had a busy couple of months, starting back in October with our booth at the [Homecoming Day] bonfire,” Ms. Careccia-Johnson said. “We sold student-made stickers and temporary tattoos, as well as custom caricature drawings, which were a big hit with the community. Just recently, a few of our members collaborated with Mr. Matarazzo’s third grade art classes. They worked with the third graders to create some colorful artwork inspired by Keith Haring, an artist known for his pop art/graffiti style. This will hopefully be displayed at our district art show in May.”

Huntington Art Honor Society members are among more than 58,000 students worldwide who show outstanding art scholarship, character and service as part of the organization.

“As for our next project, we are currently planning a mural in Huntington High School’s basement area, which will certainly require a lot of teamwork and diligence,” Ms. Careccia-Johnson said. “I am very excited to see our vision come to life!”
