Spotlight on Huntington Photographer Jack Ruthkowski

Jack Ruthkowski is one of the most talented members of Huntington High School’s Class of 2024. He’s a scholar and a proven leader while also being creative and forward thinking.
The senior has achieved in and out of the classroom. Mr. Ruthkowski is articulate and well-informed and able to converse on just about any topic. He has worked tirelessly to make every organization he’s been involved more effective in following through on its mission.
Mr. Ruthkowski’s academic achievements speak for themselves. His first quarter academic grade average was nearly 104. Teachers respect and admire the teenager. He displays a maturity beyond his years.
Among Mr. Ruthkowski’s many talents, he’s a gifted photographer. He has worked closely Huntington High School photography teacher Pamela Piffard-Williams, who has taught the senior many new techniques and helped him refine his skills.
Bursting with creativity, Mr. Ruthkowski has produced a series of stunning photographic images. He enjoys his artistic outlet and intends to continue it throughout his life.
Questions and Answers with Jack Ruthkowski
Q: How old are you and what grade are you in?
Jack Ruthkowski: “I’m 18 and in the twelfth grade.”
Q: How did you first get interested in photography?
Jack Ruthkowski: “I have always been interested in art, but never really experimented with photography. In tenth grade when my friends suggested we all take photography, I agreed. It sparked a passion and I am now in my third and final year of the photography progression.”
Q: Where do you get your ideas?
Jack Ruthkowski: “I get my ideas from nature around me. I’ve taken pictures at parks around Huntington; in my room and even in the school of things I have found outside.”
Q: Is there any specific type of photography you like best?
Jack Ruthkowski: “I like nature photography the best. I find it comes the easiest to me and there are practically infinite subjects for the photos.”
Q: How has the Huntington photography program helped you with your love of photography?
Jack Ruthkowski: “The program here at Huntington has allowed me to explore my love of photography by allowing me to use many different things that I would not have access to otherwise. The dark room really captured my attention during sophomore year. The following year I was hesitant to use the computers because I didn’t know if I would like it. As it turned out, I loved it!”
Q: Do you plan to continue with photography or go to school for it?
Jack Ruthkowski: “I plan to continue to do photography in my future. I am going to school at SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry for aquatic science and fisheries. I plan on taking pictures of the work that I do in the environment.”
Q: What clubs/activities/sports are you involved in?
Jack Ruthkowski: “I am in a few honor societies, but the activities I am most proud of participating in are Environmental Club (president), Key Club (vice president), National History Day Club (vice president), Principal’s Advisory Committee (vice president) and Science Olympiad and I am the captain of the bowling team.”
Q: Where do you see yourself in five years?
Jack Ruthkowski: “In five years I see myself either working for a company that deals with aquatic plants and animals; working for an environmental agency or continuing my education in the environment.”
