Huntington’s Environmental Club Pursues Projects

January 10, 2024

Huntington High School’s environmental club is continuing to pursue various projects centered on sustainability and Earth-friendly advocacy in an age of rapid climate change and threats to the habitats of thousands of species.

The organization’s executive board features Jack Ruthkowski (co-president), Damaris Mani-Munoz (co-president), Samantha Koepele (co-vice president), Andrea Mani-Munoz (co-vice president), Jannel Marroquin (treasurer), Olivia Polinsky (recording secretary) and Charlotte Gordon (co-publicist) and Emma Boyle (co-publicist). Science teacher Deborah Beck is the group’s faculty advisor.

“The Environmental Club is up to a plethora of exciting activities,” Ms. Gordon said. “We are working on scheduling a terrarium building event where students and teachers can pay a small entry fee to construct their own plant houses. We’ve also been collecting and recycling the science wing’s paper materials to prevent unnecessary waste. We’re currently in the planning phase for our spring clothing swap, where we’ll ask the Huntington High School community to donate gently used clothes and then we’ll sort them for an in-school thrifting experience.”

The clothing swap is in line with the club’s focus on sustainability, recycling and reducing waste. Club members are true believers in changing habits to make the world a better, greener and cleaner place.

“We had our first clothing swap in the fall, which was a complete success,” Mr. Ruthkowski said. “In the early spring we plan on holding a terrarium building workshop. And a little later into the spring, we will hold another clothing swap.”

The organization hopes its clothing swap initiative grows after an impressive start. A bake sale to raise monies is also planned.
