Boys’ Basketball Clinic Draws More than 40 Players

The Huntington High School varsity boys’ basketball team held a free three-hour clinic last week, which drew more than 40 Huntington students spread across grades 4-8. The action played out in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

All the baskets and all the courts were in full use by the boys. The event was coordinated by second year head coach Peter Lipka. Current varsity players assisted in teaching skills and running drills. There were also full court games.

Regardless of their respective age, players gave their all during the three hour session. Current players on Finley’s two boys’ basketball teams were among the participants along with students from Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School and Woodhull Intermediate School.

This marked the second year that Coach Lipka has organized a youth clinic during the winter vacation. Interest in the boys’ basketball programs at Finley and the high school continues to remain high.

More such clinics are planned along with a Booster Club sponsored summer camp program. Details about future clinics and the summer camp will be announced soon.

Athletic department officials are working with Coach Lipka to build a successful program at all levels. Enhancing the player experience is an important component of this initiative. Blue Devil officials have discussed playing a game next year at Brooklyn College against a New York City public school. The Huntington varsity girls’ team is also interested in playing a game at Brooklyn College on the same date. Details are being worked out.

Last week’s clinic participants donated dozens on non-perishable food items, which were delivered to Tri-CYA.
