College Awareness Day Encourages Discussions

January 4, 2024

College Awareness Day in Huntington UFSD served to both inform and encourage discussions among teachers and students about post high school studies and career possibilities.

“Students were motivated by discussions led by our teachers and counselors about the challenges and rewards of attending college,” said Jeannette Alomia, district director of guidance and testing. “Students were encouraged to set goals, do their best in school and never give up on their dreams.”

Huntington teachers and counselors believe in their hearts that it’s never too early to start thinking about the future, even for those in elementary school. While college is probably one of the last things on the mind of a young student, beginning to build a foundation of knowledge and taking stock of a person’s own interests is a worthwhile pursuit at any age the faculty members claim.

Mrs. Alomia said that as a first generation college graduate herself, she knows how important it is to have early conversations and work on goals around college and career. Reduced to its essence, that’s what College Awareness Day was all about.

“Every Huntington student must have the opportunity to pursue their dreams and the district is making unprecedented investments in college and career access to make that a reality; especially for students who would not have had these opportunities in the past,” Mrs. Alomia said.

Teachers and administrators posted the names of the colleges they attended outside their rooms and offices and wore college apparel to promote discussions and contribute to the spirit of the day.

Faculty and staff spoke to students about their college experiences. Morning announcements encouraged students to explore colleges and discuss possibilities with their counselor or teacher.

“It was evident this event brought a lot of smiles and unity among staff and student body,” Ms. Alomia said. “It was wonderful to see the Huntington school community unite for this important event.”

The initiative also included an Alumni Day, where recent graduates discussed their experience transitioning from high school to college and gave insight into what to expect at college.

Ms. Alomia said that Huntington students should stick to their goals, never give up and keep aiming for the stars.

“Parents and guardians, never stop encouraging and advocating for your children and seek help from our wonderful teachers and counselors as needed as we all in this together,” Mrs. Alomia said.
