Huntington JV Boys’ Basketball Proves Competitive

The Huntington High School junior varsity boys’ basketball team surprised many opponents by being so competitive this winter. The Blue Devils finished with an overall 10-10 mark and came close in many of the losses.
First year head coach Malcolm Eugene had the team hustling on both ends of the court. The Huntington JV was captained by James Ruthkowski, William Donaghy and Henry Gerberg. The Blue Devils claimed second place at the 33rd Frank Gugliottta Memorial Tournament at Walt Whitman.
The Blue Devils were led by Donaghy and Robbie Campbell, who both starred at guard. “Will is a skill player who takes coaching and works hard,” Eugene said. “Robbie was the heart and soul of the team with unmatched passion and energy.”
Scoring 75 points against West Islip was the highlight of the season. “We played great team ball,” he said.
Donaghy led the Blue Devils in scoring with Shates Miller pulling down a team high number of rebounds and Michael Tucker leading in steals.
The roster also included Ricardo Berry, Jermine Campbell, Reed Cummiskey, Shelby Gillenwater, Gannon Johnson, Zachary Matthews, Brendan McNulty and Jesse Perez.
“We were a family that worked hard together and bonded,” Eugene said. The coach expects more success next year and has already set a goal of winning 15 games.
