Blue Devil boys and girls varsity fencers fared well in the individual county championships at Ward Melville last weekend. Huntington crowned four All-County fencers in women’s and men’s sabre and men’s foil.
Like their opponents, each of the Huntington fencers were in the top 20 of season performance records for their sex and weapon (sabre, foil, epee). The competition three pools of six fencers each, followed by a pair of pools with six fencers and finally a championship round with only six fencers.
• Senior Benjamin Edgar-McNerney placed second in men’s sabre
• Senior Chase Williams placed fourth in men’s foil
• Senior Jake Amend placed fifth in men’s foil
• Freshman Julia Goodwin placed sixth in women’s sabre
• Senior Layna Abraham placed 16th in women’s epee
• Freshman Chelsea Drummings placed16th place in women’s sabre
Based on their final finish, Edgar-McNerney, Williams, Amend and Goodwin are all All-County. Abraham and Drummings are honorable mention All-County.
The final round saw Williams and Amend having to battle each other. “How to cheer and coach for that bout was summed up by teammate Thomas Galicia Martinez, who yelled out ‘Go Blue Devils!’” head coach Michelle O’Brien said.
Edgar-McNerney and Amend both captured All-Long Island recognition after posting an overall season record that put them in the top two from Section XI for their sex and weapon.
“It was an extremely exciting Saturday and a great finish to our season,” said O’Brien, who is assistant by Vin O’Garra. “Blue Devils fencing is looking forward to winning more medals in the next few years. Although four team stars are leaving us, the remaining fencers have a lot of young, promising talent!”
