New Huntington High School Investment Club

February 14, 2024

Senior Dante Salgado has spearheaded the creation of a new student investment club at Huntington High School. The teenager circulated a petition among his classmates with more than 100 signing on in support of establishing the new club. He then created a PowerPoint presented outlining the merits of developing such an organization.

Business teacher Bryan Outsen is the investment club faculty advisor.

“By creating this club, we aim to equip students with valuable financial knowledge and skills that will benefit them throughout their lives,” Mr. Salgado wrote. “Understanding investments and finance is crucial in today’s world and this club would provide a platform for students to learn and discuss these topics in a supportive and engaging environment. This club will foster a sense of financial responsibility and empower students to make informed decisions about their own financial futures.”

Huntington business teacher Bryan Outsen has been appointed as the club’s faculty advisor. Prior to embarking on a teaching career, he worked for a financial services firm.

“Essentially the club is designed to educate students on their options for investing and savings in today’s economic market,” Mr. Outsen said. “Members will participate in a national stock market game competition where they can simulate real life trading of stocks. We will discuss alternative investing methods such as cryptocurrency, real estate and air bnb arbitrage. We will have a meeting on credit, debt and student loan dangers.”

A trip to a financial services firm is also planned so club members can gain a firsthand view of the day-to-day responsibilities and life of a financial advisor.

Mr. Salgado also sees the club studying mortgages and even retirement plans. The club’s first meeting is set for Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. in Room 201.
