The Eyes Have it in Huntington Studio Art Class

A group of Studio Art students completed a project focused on eyes. The images created by the teenagers are haunting and intriguing and display the impressive talent possessed by the young artists.
Studio Art is an introductory level course at Huntington High School. It’s one of the three classes that can fulfill the graduation requirement in art. No drawing experience is necessary.
Studio Art students explore various media from painting, colored pencil, ink drawings, graphite and more. Students feels it’s a great class where they are able to explore their creativity.
Teacher Jenna Merget is always striving to keep things interesting and fun in her classroom. She recently assigned her students something special to work on.
“I started this project during Covid,” Ms. Merget said. “I felt that while students were wearing masks, their eyes spoke volumes in their expressions. However, as times have improved, I wanted to continue this project. I love putting these on display for the art show as it is so captivating”
The assignment entailed students studying the value in famous works of art. “We practice creating highlights and shading in our sketchbooks and practice with a step by step ‘how to draw an eye’ video,” Mrs. Merget said.
Senior class intern Ashlee Vaquerano assisted in teaching students about value and the value scale. “It was great to see students apply their knowledge in value while creating realistic drawings,” she said. “You can really recognize each student by their eyes.”
Mrs. Merget was quite pleased with how it all turned out. “I am very passionate about this project and feel that it connects with the following verse from a 1987 song by Air Supply,” she said.

Than the look in the eyes of a child.”
