Huntington Robotics in FIRST In Show This Weekend

Huntington Robotics Team 5016 members will vie in the FIRST In Show competition this Saturday and Sunday in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium at the high school.

The Blue Devils are in the midst of an eight week period along with teams from across the country and around the world, building, testing and programming an autonomous robot using a LEGO spike prime set to solve missions on an obstacle course.

Lights, camera, STEAM! Science, technology, engineering, the arts and math (STEAM) have huge impacts on our world. These fields together inspire big ideas, bold actions and allow creativity to flourish. Those skilled as engineers, scientists, mathematicians, artists and technology extraordinaires make it possible to bring us all together, entertain us, and move us emotionally.

Huntington is captained by Samantha McGloin and co-captained by Nelson Moreno. Jordana Boxer is chief of business operations and Jaipreet Singh is chief of technical operations. Technology teacher Omar Santiago is the faculty advisor.

FIRST In Show, presented by Qualcomm, will showcase how the STEM fields play a role in the arts and help design the world we see today.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) encourages young people to pursue careers in engineering and science by showing them how interesting and fun those fields can be.

“Our mission is to show students of every age that science, technology and problem-solving are not only fun and rewarding, but are proven paths to successful careers and a bright future for us all,” states the FIRST website.

FIRST Lego League teams competing in qualifying matches earn the opportunity to advance and compete in the FIRST LEGO League Championship tournament at Hicksville High School. Winners of this competition will be headed to the World Championships at Houston Texas.

Huntington Robotics TEAM 5016 is the host of this weekend’s FLL event. The Blue Devils are volunteering throughout the two days to ensure a smooth running operation.

The Blue Devils have participated in special events across Huntington UFSD to help stimulate interest in robotics and to encourage those at the elementary and middle school levels to eventually joined the fun with Team 5016 at Huntington High School.

This weekend’s festivities will include food and drink concessions to aid the Blue Devils’ fundraising efforts.

Huntington Robotics will be participating in a pair of upcoming multi-day all-day regional competitions at Rockland Community College and Hofstra University.
