February 7, 2024

Patricia Avelli has been appointed to serve as assistant principal at Huntington High School. Huntington School Board members approved the appointment of the longtime math teacher this past Monday night in the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School auditorium. She had been serving in an interim capacity since last fall.

A member of Huntington UFSD’s math department faculty since September 2011, Mrs. Avelli, who is known by her colleagues as Trish, earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at Adelphi University in May 2006 and May 2007, respectively. She completed administrative certification requirements at Stony Brook University.

Mrs. Avelli has taught a variety of math courses at the high school, including Beacon pre-calculus, pre-calculus honors, intermediate algebra inclusion, financial algebra, Common Core algebra and AIS, Common Core algebra inclusion, pre-calculus BC honors, intergraded algebra and AIS and algebra II honors.

Chosen by Huntington’s Class of 2022 as Distinguished Teacher, Mrs. Avelli served as its faculty advisor. At one time or another, she also served stretches as the advisor to both the high school’s National Honor Society and Math Honor Society chapters.

While studying for her administrative certification, Mrs. Avelli interned with Huntington High School Principal Brenden Cusack. She has mentored new teachers, served on grading, scholarship and interview committees and was a member of the high school’s Leadership Team and Shared Decision Making Committee.

“It has been a true joy having Trish join the administrative team here at Huntington High School and she has taken on this challenging role with grace, patience, a sense of fairness and a whole lot of hard work,” Mr. Cusack said. “I’m unequivocally confident that her positive impact at Huntington will only continue to expand over time. I look forward to continuing our work together.”
