February 2, 2024

Three days of spectacular performances await crowds this weekend as actors and stagehands from Woodhull Intermediate School and Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School take the stage for “The Little Mermaid, Jr.” musical at Huntington High School

The Woodhull cast and crew will perform on Friday at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday at 2 p.m. Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School cast and crew will work their magic on Saturday at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door 30 minutes prior to each show.

The show is directed by drama club advisors and Huntington High School alums Jennifer Szilagy and Stephanie Shea. Rehearsals have been ongoing for weeks. The show has come together nicely and directors say that crowds will be impressed.

The show transcends three different schools; Woodhull, Jack Abrams STEM and Huntington High School. Students rehearse at their respective schools for several weeks before moving to the high school for two weeks of rehearsals to help translate what they’ve learned to the larger stage.

“We are supported by an amazing staff including Chris and Glenn Deveau, who dedicate hours of their time leading the stage crew,” Ms. Szilagy said. “We also have a handful of high school assistants, including Landry Flynn, Maggie O’Toole, Sofia Rodriguez, Josie Sullivan and Emily Kustera. These girls volunteer their time after school to make this show a success. There has also been an amazing group of parents who have volunteered their time and energy to help after hours in order to finish every task that needs to get done. We couldn’t do it without the support of these amazing people.”

The cast and crew of the two schools is a combined 220 students. For the first time in many years, fourth graders have been permitted to participate along with the fifth and sixth graders. “We are thrilled to have been able to open up this opportunity to them,” Ms. Szilagy said.

The enchanting musical has been one of Disney’s most popular over the years. The cast and crew has really taken to the production with enthusiasm.

The two drama club advisors love what they are doing just as much as the kids. “We are both former graduates and members of the Huntington High School drama club and it means the world to us that we can keep this amazing tradition going for the students,” Ms. Shea said.

Tickets are priced at $10 for adults; $5 for students and senior citizens ages 65+.
