Huntington UFSD to Celebrate National School Counseling Week

February 1, 2024

The unique role that school counselors play in their lives of students and the community will be celebrated in Huntington UFSD during National School Counseling Week from February 5-9.

Huntington’s current school counseling staff includes Bernadette Walsh, Daphne Marcelin, Diana Bonilla, Daniela Vargas, Evelyn Hernandez, Ivy Alvayero, Steve Lashin, Lauren Brunoni, Alison Logan, Paloma Ramlogan, Lissanny Batista, Ruth Escobar and leave replacement Lauren Waldron.

The special week honoring school counselors provides recognition for those who implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century.

“School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, career options and social/emotional skills,” said Jill Cook, American School Counselor Assn. executive director. “School counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success.”

The concept and practice of school counseling is more than 100 years old. “It evolved being shaped by various economic, social and educational forces guided by the work of many individuals,” according to the ASCA.

The theme of this year’s week is “School Counselors: Standards-Based, Student-Focused.” More than 100,000 school counselors nationwide will be participating in the week’s festivities.

“I am proud and honored to lead the guidance team and will continue to ensure that students’ needs are our utmost priority in our daily practices” said Jeannette Alomia, Huntington UFSD’s director of guidance and testing, K-12.
