H-ton Students Interested in College STEM Program

Farmingdale State College held its inaugural Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) meeting at Huntington High School and the gathering drew interest from students.

“STEP offers students an opportunity to participate in college preparation workshops, STEM Saturday academies and free college courses,” said Kevene Lowrie, the district’s chairperson of science, K-12. “If students engage in scientific research/ investigations after school, they can receive a stipend at the end of the school year.

Currently, 26 students are enrolled in the program and nine are pursing research projects.

Huntington UFSD is one of five districts who is participating in the completely free program.

The program includes:

• College and career readiness workshops that will assist with gaining the tools necessary to succeed in college and the real world. Access to college related activities such as college classes, college visits, and assistance with completing your college applications.

• We offer help with tutoring, research mentoring and other general academic guidance.

• Students participate in hands-on STEM based classes.

• STEP academies take place in the spring, summer, and fall.

To be eligible for the program, student must:

• Be enrolled in grade 7-12

• Be a member of a historically underrepresented or economically disadvantaged group: African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino/a, Native American/Alaskan Native or any ethnic background and demonstrate economic qualifications through eligibility for free or reduced lunch

• Have an overall GPA of 80 or “B”

• Be a New York State resident for the past 12 months
