Sophomore Cole Lima is a Man of Many Talents

Huntington High School sophomore Cole Lima is a man of many talents. Academically he is a strong student and artistically and athletically he can keep pace with the best. He’s currently the junior band representative and is playing an important role with the Blue Devil marching band.
Mr. Lima’s musical talents first surfaced many years ago. “My interest in music came just before fourth grade when my sister told me that I should learn the trombone,” he said. “After learning the basics I realized that my favorite part of the day was going to band. Then my sister joined the marching band and I watched many of their shows. After realizing how much I enjoyed them, I was motivated to join the Huntington Blue Devil marching band. Sadly, I was still too young to join, but Covid happened to cancel their shows that year and I was able to attend the spring rehearsals with my trombone.”
The teenager has expanded and refined his skills. “After a couple of years of playing the trombone with the marching band, the director, Mr. [Andre] Rizzuto asked me if I wanted to play sousaphone (tuba),” Mr. Lima said. “I happily agreed at the chance to learn a new instrument and had fun figuring out the challenges and quirks of playing the sousaphone. Thus I continued playing into the present and happened to land a part in the quintet mariachi band portion of this year’s show.”
Mr. Lima plans to take a break from the Blue Devil varsity fencing team this winter to pursue his interests in judo.
“So far, I don’t have any particular aspirations for my future quite yet, however I hope that it will stay aligned with music,” Mr. Lima said.
