Finley’s Yorker Club is for History Lovers

September 10, 2024

The J. Taylor Finley Middle School Yorker Club is for seventh and eighth graders who simply love history. Social studies teacher Jarrad Richter is the club’s faculty advisor.

The Yorker Club’s first meeting is Thursday, November 7 in room 215 at 3 p.m. All Finley students are invited to join the group. While the first meeting is several weeks away, it’s not too early for students to begin thinking about possible National History Day contest projects.

“Students can do their research solo or in a group of up to five kids to compete in categories such as individual and group exhibit, website and documentary,” Mr. Richter said. “This year’s National History Day theme is Rights & Responsibilities in History.

The purposed of the Yorker Club is to promote the study of history, encourage an appreciation for history, develop historical thinking and research skills and facilitate the creation of a theme-based project for the National History Day competition.

The Yorker club meets every Thursday from the first week in November through the third week in March when school is in session. “This period may be extended if a student or students move on to the regional and/or state and/or national competition,” Mr. Richter said.

The club doesn’t have officers. Depending on the type of project a student pursues, they work individually or as a group with Mr. Richter providing them with guidance, support and helpful advice.
