October 28 , 2024
Yasir Jones ran for 201 yards and three touchdowns and Tommy Kline returned an interception 35 yards and a kick 90 yards for touchdowns to carry the Huntington varsity football team to its fifth straight victory as the Blue Devils shutout Deer Park on the Falcons’ homecoming day, 45-0.
Huntington (5-2) scored in every quarter to stay in playoff contention. The Blue Devils host rugged Half Hollow Hills East (6-1) next Saturday (November 2 at 1:30 p.m.) in the final regular season game.
With junior quarterback Jacob Guznik taking the week off to recover from an injury, Huntington turned almost exclusively to a ground game, rushing 36 times for 383 yards.
Jones averaged just over 10 yards per carry for each of his 20 rushes. Tim McDonald (five carries for 57 yards), Zayvion McCoy (four carries for 51 yards) and AJ White (three carries for 45 yards) were all effective out of the backfield.
Huntington was just as good defensively. The Blue Devils made 54 solo tackles, four tackles for a loss, 10 assisted tackles, a pass deflection, two quarterback sacks and an interception.
McDonald made nine solo tackles and assisted on two others. Jordan Thorbourne had seven tackles and Tom Smith had five solo tackles and two assists. White and Frank Algieri both had four tackles.
Placekicker Robbie Campbell was perfect, splitting the uprights six times for extra points and also notching a 38 yard field goal.
Kline was great on both sides of the ball and on special teams, too, with a pair of touchdowns along with several tackles.
Huntington head coach Ron Wilson announced team awards after the game with Campbell the Special Teams MVP; Jones and lineman Ethan Lawless the Offensive MVP’s; Thorbourne the Defensive MVP and Kline and McDonald the Team MVP’s.
