Huntington High School to Host Presidential Election Forum
October 28 , 2024
As America prepares to go to the polls on Tuesday, November 5, the Huntington High School social studies department will hold an “enlightening forum” in the high school cafeteria on Wednesday, October 30 from 7-8 p.m.
“This important event is an opportunity for active participation by attendees,” said Joseph Leavy, Huntington UFSD chairman of humanities. “We promise an increased self-awareness of the political process for students. This one-hour event is open to all juniors and seniors and it is an opportunity to gain extra credit in social studies classes.”
Students themselves selected six topics for discussion: economic trends, including inflation, taxes and opportunities; abortion and the states; immigration; gun control; energy and climate concerns; US policies in the world.
“A team of social studies teachers and students have organized this event in which students can identify where they stand on several important issues, then learn where the two presidential candidates and their party’s platform stand on these same issues,” Mr. Leavy said.
“Explore how best, in a democracy, one can make their vote count and make it meaningful for you . . . the voter,” exclaims a promotional flyer.
Here is a fun fact from the Leadership Aspirations website:
Roughly 244 million Americans will be eligible to vote in 2024. The 2020 election saw record turnout of 66.6% of eligible voters. If turnout is that high again, more than 162 million ballots will be cast by November.
