Huntington Robotics Preps for New Competitive Season

October 24 , 2024

Huntington High School robotics team members are busy preparing for the upcoming competitive season, meeting every Monday and Tuesday after school.

New robotics team members learn how to steer last year's roboto.

The Blue Devil technological wizards are led by team captain Jaipreet Singh, vice-captain Oliver Gerberg and chief of business operations Jordana Boxer. Omar Santiago serves as the organization’s faculty advisor.

“Recently we have been teaching our new team members about all the different aspects of robotics and how to use the different machines in the shop,” Ms. Boxer said. There have been coding workshops featuring team mentors coming into the wood shop and teaching team members about the types of code used for the competition robot.

“We have been teaching the team members how to operate the different machines in the shop by having them work on various projects,” Ms. Boxer explained. For example, team members created key chains, pens and pen holders, where were presented to Huntington School Board members at a meeting recognizing their volunteer service.

Club veterans have also been teaching newcomers how to drive the robot by steering up last year’s game field in the wood shop and letting them operate last year’s robot in order to build the skills required to drive the robot at upcoming competitions.

Team veterans have also been incorporating business workshops into their meetings to help new members learn about presenting, fundraising, marketing and community outreach.

“These four things are what enable our team to have the money to build our robot and enable us to give back to the Huntington community for all they have done to support us,” Ms. Boxer said.

Huntington Robotics is hosting a fundraiser at the American Legion Hall on December 12 from 7-9 p.m. to raise monies to supplement their activities.

“We are so excited for the upcoming season and we can’t wait to see what we are able to accomplish this year,” Ms. Boxer said.
