Blue Devils Overwhelm Bellport Early in 21-0 Victory

October 16 , 2024

The Huntington football team overwhelmed visiting Bellport early in the first half before a standing room only crowd at Blue Devil Stadium and went on to capture its biggest victory of the season last Friday, 21-0.

The rare Friday afternoon kicked off at 2 p.m. due to the need to conclude early to allow players observing Yom Kippur to get home by sundown. With the game beginning 20 minutes before the end of the school day, the entire school emptied out to watch the first half of the contest.

Buoyed by the large and loud crowd, Huntington quarterback Jacob Guzik completed 11-of-13 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown. Tommy Kline caught six passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. The senior also scored on a 31 yard touchdown run and had three tackles on defense, including one for a loss and a pass deflection.

The Blue Devils rushed 29 times for 162 yards giving Huntington 290 yards of total offense. Placekicker Robbie Campbell drilled all three extra point attempts through the uprights.

Huntington’s defense notched its first shutout of the fall, recording 39 solo tackles, six tackles for a loss, 11 assists, three pass deflections and a quarterback sack and two fumble recoveries.

Senior Timmy McDonald turned in another inspiring performance, catching two passes for five yards; rushing 10 times for 30 yards and recording seven solo tackles, three tackles for a loss and two assists.

Senior Titan Elysee also enjoyed a great game on both sides of the ball with four carries for 46 yards and a touchdown and three solo tackles, two pass deflections and a fumble recovery.

Dylan Heller made three tackles and recovered a fumble. Ethan Lawless had three tackles, including two for a loss, sacked the quarterback and assisted on two other tackles.

Huntington’s early offensive outburst included a pair of receptions by Jordan Thorbourne for gains covering 18 yards. Tommy Smith caught two passes for 17 yards and made three tackles, forced a fumble and assisted on two other tackles.

Yasir Jones returned to the field after being injured several weeks ago and the junior rushed five times for 25 yards and made three solo tackles, assisted on another and recovered a fumble.

The Bellport (3-2) defense stopped Huntington in the second half, holding the Blue Devils scoreless, but the Clipper offense was also unable to score.

The action played out under a bright sun with district officials standing on the running track adjacent to the home sideline.

Huntington plays at Copiague (0-5) on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Eagles dropped a 31-21 verdict to Smithtown East last week.
