The College Board has named Huntington High School to the AP School Honor Roll. Huntington was awarded Silver recognition for having exceeded various student metrics associated with Advanced Placement courses and exams.

“The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools that have done outstanding work to welcome more students into AP courses and support them on the path to college success,” said Trevor Packer, College Board senior vice president for AP and instruction. “Research shows students who take AP courses and exams are more likely to attend college and graduate on time.”

Huntington High School offers students 30 Advanced Placement courses. Last year, more than 300 students took more than 800 AP exams covering 27 courses. It took Huntington only one year to move from the Bronze level of recognition to that of Silver.

“The students who enter four year colleges with credit from AP accelerate their path to graduation and build confidence for college success,” Mr. Packer said. “And even those who don’t earn college credit, AP coursework provides early exposure to college level work and contributes to a college-going school culture.”

The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are “delivering results for students while broadening access,” the College Board said. “Schools can earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit and maximizing college readiness.”

Huntington High School has been aggressive in its efforts to encourage more students to enroll in Advanced Placement classes and to challenge themselves by taking AP exams.

“There has been consistent effort at Huntington High School over the past number of years to expand Advanced Placement opportunities for all students,” Assistant Superintendent Brenden Cusack said. “This honor roll acknowledgment by the College Board confirms that these efforts continue to be successful and we are all very proud!”

District officials said Huntington is now aiming to reach the Gold level. The high school’s AP course lineup has strong enrollment in the classes this year.

“The schools that have earned this distinction are proof that it is possible to expand access to these college-level courses and still drive strong performance,” Mr. Packer said. “They represent the best of AP.”
