October 11, 2024

In what essentially amounted to a winner-take-all showdown, the Huntington High School varsity boy’s golf team nipped talented Half Hollow Hills West for the league title on Senior Day at the Huntington Crescent Club late Wednesday afternoon.

The six seniors were honored at the Huntington Crescent Club.

The hard-fought victory on the final day of the regular season showcased not only the Blue Devils’ skill and determination, but also highlighted the teamwork and perseverance that carried Huntington through the challenges of the fall campaign.

“The match against Hills West was a true test of character, with players facing intense pressure on every hole,” head coach Michael Marinello said. Team captain William Fallon and standout sophomore Will Donaghy turned in low rounds of 40.

Fallon’s steady play and Donaghy’s impressive shot-making kept the momentum firmly in their favor. Jack Corcoran contributed to the victory with an impressive score of 41, while Chase Gadaire shot a solid 43. Strong performances were also turned in by Jake Severine and George Mueger, who helped anchor the team’s overall effort.

The meet came down to the final hole with the pressure intense as parents and coaches stood watching from the gallery.

“Seniors Ryan Scanlon, Anthony Addeo, Will Fallon, Chase Gadaire, George Mueger and Jake Severine have played pivotal roles throughout the season, exemplifying leadership and skill as they guided the team to victory,” Marinello said. “Adding to the special atmosphere were the parents who came out to support their sons on this memorable day. Celebrating both the league title and the achievements of the senior players created a heartfelt moment for everyone involved. The bond between the players and their families was evident as they celebrated together, reflecting the teamwork that extends beyond the golf course.”

During Marinello’s tenure, Huntington has added to its boys’ golf legacy, winning league and conference titles in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2021, 2023 and now 2024. The consistent success is a testament to Marinello’s coaching philosophy and the talent within the program.

“We focused on mental toughness and strategy throughout the season,” Marinello said. “Facing a strong opponent like Hills West, it was crucial for our players to remain focused and confident.”.

Huntington finished the season with a team record of 9-1 and an individual match record of 45-11-4.

With the league title secured, Huntington has now turned its focus to the individual conference and county tournaments. Players are eager to showcase their skills and represent the Blue Devils in these championship events.

“Winning the league title is a huge accomplishment, but we’re hungry for more,” Fallon said. “We want to carry this momentum and earn all-conference and all-county honors.”
