October 7, 2024

The Huntington football team shook off three separate mishaps on its opening possession and go on to overwhelm Smithtown East this past Saturday, 34-14. The Blue Devils amassed more than 400 yards of total offense to even their record at 2-2 halfway through the regular season.

Huntington quickly rebounded from an uneven start to jump out to a 20-0 halftime lead. The Blue Devils put the game away with a pair of third quarter touchdowns to go ahead 34-0.

Huntington rushed 41 times for 319 yards and four touchdowns and caught nine passes for another 111 yards and a touchdown. The Blue Devil defense recorded 58 solo tackles, including four for a loss, eight assisted tackles, two quarterback sacks, two pass deflections and an interception. Placekicker Robbie Campbell drilled four of five extra points.

On a gorgeous early fall day, Huntington proved to be too much for Smithtown East to handle. Titan Elysee carried the ball eight times for 104 yards. Quarterback Jacob Guzik ran for 75 yards including two touchdowns. Tim McDonald rushed 12 times for 80 yards and two touchdowns. AJ White (six carries for 51 yards) and Justin Agyeman (six carries for 40 yards) also gobbled up yardage.

Huntington needed a big game and got it to preserve its playoff hopes. Guzik was a perfect nine-for-nine passing. Tommy Kline caught five passes for 67 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Thorbourne had a pair of receptions for 22 yards.

The key the game? “Sticking to what we know and playing for each other,” Thorbourne said. McDonald and Frank Algieri had seven tackles each. Elysee made six tackles and deflected a pass. Kline also made six tackles, including one for a loss, deflected a pass and returned an interception 40 yards. Ethan Lawless made five solo tackles and assisted on two others. AJ White had four tackles, a quarterback sack and pressured the quarterback out of the pocket on another play.

Huntington hosts Bellport on Friday at Blue Devil Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. The Clippers glided past Copiague on Saturday, 31-21 to improve to 3-1. Bellport previously defeated Deer Park (27-14) and Northport (7-0) and lost to North Babylon (20-15).
